Ariadne auf Náxos

Play with music (melodrama) by Georg Benda (text by J C Brandes), first produced in Gotha, Germany, on 27 January 1775.

It is also the title of an opera by Richard Strauss (libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal), originally a one-act opera played after a shortened version of Molière's play Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, with incidental music by Strauss. It was first produced in Stuttgart, Germany, on 25 October 1912; a second version, with a new operatic first act, was produced at the Vienna Opera, Austria, on 4 October 1916.
