Ariovistus

German chieftain who crossed the Rhine in 71 BC to help the Arverni and Sequani during their struggle with the Aedui for supremacy in Gaul. However, tempted by the rich farmlands of Alsace, he occupied the country and oppressed his former allies. In 58 BC his German forces were annihilated by Julius Caesar.
