Aristides (c. 530-468 BC)

Athenian politician. He was one of the ten Athenian generals at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and was elected chief archon, or magistrate. Later he came into conflict with the democratic leader Themistocles, and was exiled in about 483 BC. He returned to fight against the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC and in the following year commanded the Athenians at Plataea. As commander of the Athenian fleet he established the alliance of Ionian states known as the Delian League.
