An unlisted contaminant, Aristolochia, turned out to be the source of the problem. Joelle Nortier and colleagues found cancer in 18 of 39 Belgians who had been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure caused by the Chinese herb Aristolochia fangchi. titanum, Rafflesias, and the pelican flower, Aristolochia gigantea, whose pipe-shaped flowers can reach more than a foot long. |
