Arizona Strip

Region to the north of the Grand Canyon and the west of the Colorado River, in the northwest corner of Arizona, USA; area c. 36,000 sq km/14,000 sq mi.

Isolated from the rest of the state by the river and canyon, it is bound also by the Virgin Mountains and Grand Wash Cliffs to the west, and the Vermillion Cliffs along the Utah border to the north. The Shivwits, Uinkaret, Kanab, and Kaibab plateaux are in the Arizona Strip. Ancestral land to several bands of Paiutes, the area contains Pipe Spring, the most reliable water source in this dry, rugged corner of Arizona, now the site of a national monument situated, along with the community of Moccasin, within the Kaibab Indian Reservation; population (1990) 200. Fredonia, Colorado City (formerly Short Creek), and Littlefield were originally settled (1860s–70s) by Mormons from Utah. The Navajo Bridge spans the Colorado River near Lees Ferry, providing access to the Strip from the east.
