Ark Royal, HMS

    0.02 sec.

Ark Royal, HMS

British Royal Navy ship. There have been five ships in the Royal Navy's history that have carried this name. The first Ark Royal was bought by the Royal Navy in 1587 and was involved in the attack on the Spanish Armada. In World War I the Ark Royal became the first ship ever to be built specifically for carrying aircraft, and was used mainly in the Dardanelles campaign 1915–16. The three subsequent ships were all purpose-built carriers and have served up to the present day. The latest Ark Royal is the flagship of the Royal Navy.
