Arkansas City| Town in Cowley County, south-central Kansas, USA; population (1990) 12,800. It is situated at the junction of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers, 72 km/45 mi southeast of Wichita and 5 km/3 mi north of the Oklahoma border. The processing and rail hub for a grain-rich cattle raising region, the town also has oil refineries and petroleum-related industries. It is home to Cowley County Community College (1922). |
| Arkansas City was the staging point for the opening of Oklahoma lands in 1893, when tens of thousands of homesteaders rushed into that territory to stake free land claims; the nearby Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum chronicles this history. |
