Arkansas City

Town in Cowley County, south-central Kansas, USA; population (1990) 12,800. It is situated at the junction of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers, 72 km/45 mi southeast of Wichita and 5 km/3 mi north of the Oklahoma border. The processing and rail hub for a grain-rich cattle raising region, the town also has oil refineries and petroleum-related industries. It is home to Cowley County Community College (1922).

Arkansas City was the staging point for the opening of Oklahoma lands in 1893, when tens of thousands of homesteaders rushed into that territory to stake free land claims; the nearby Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum chronicles this history.
