Arlen, Michael

Arlen, Michael (1895–1956)

Bulgarian writer of Armenian descent. He became a naturalized British subject 1922. His best-selling novel, The Green Hat (1924), reflected the stylishly irresponsible spirit of the 1920s.

His other books include Ghost Stories (1927), Lily Christine (1928), and Hell! said the Duchess (1934).

The London Venture (1920) was his first book, and two years later his Piracy was favourably received. Among his other novels and collections of stories are These Charming People (1923), May Fair (1925), Young Men in Love (1929), Babes in the World (1930), Men Dislike Women (1931), and Flying Dutchman (1939). He also wrote four plays, including a dramatization of The Green Hat. He died in New York City.
