Armentières

Town in northern France on the River Lys in the département of Nord; population (1990) 26,200. Major industries include the manufacture of textiles, especially linen, printing, brewing, dyes, and clothing. The song ‘Mademoiselle from Armentières’ originated during World War I, when the town was held by the British and was a popular rest centre for British troops. The town was flattened by bombardment during the German Spring Offensive of 1918, but has been rebuilt.
