Armida

Opera by Haydn (libretto by J Durandi), first produced at Eszterháza, Hungary, on 26 February 1784. The plot describes how the sorceress Armida attempts to seduce the crusader knight Rinaldo.

It is also the title of an opera by Rossini (libretto by G Schmidt, after Torquato Tasso), first produced at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, Italy, on 11 November 1817. A further opera on the same theme was composed by Dvořák (libretto by J Vrchlický, based on his Czech translation of Tasso), first produced at the Czech Theatre, Prague (now in the Czech Republic), on 25 March 1904.

There are also settings by Tommaso Traetta (Vienna, 1761), Pasquale Anfossi (Turin, 1770), Antonio Salieri (Vienna, 1771), and Antonio Sacchini (Milan, 1772).
