Armidale

City in New South Wales, southeastern Australia, 567 km/352 mi north of Sydney; population (1996) 21,330. Armidale is the site of the University of New England (1954), and it is the service centre of a sheep-rearing district; industries include sawmills, joinery, and plywood milling. Among the 19th-century buildings of the city are mansions of the squatters (early settlers).
