A street party in 1919 to celebrate the first anniversary of the World War I armistice. The war came officially to an end on 11 November 1918 when, in a railway carriage at Compiègne in France, Marshal Foch, on behalf of the Allies, signed an agreement with the Central Powers to cease hostilities.

In the US this holiday is now called Veterans Day.

It has been 88 years since Armistice Day, and so veterans of the trenches and No Man's Land are all centenarians, and down to a handful in Britain.
On the last Armistice Day, November 11, 2005, in Ottawa, Chaplain Major Bourque said the prayers and gave a homily.
