armoured train

Railway train protected by armour and usually carrying several guns. They were extensively used in World War I to protect vulnerable supply lines by patrolling or escorting supply trains, particularly by the Russian Army, which had long stretches of railway line liable to attack from roving German cavalry patrols.

I happened to be in Moscow in August 2001, when the reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Il traveled to Russia in an armored train for a summit with President Putin (photo, above).
After arriving in Vladivostok, Hoffman and the rest of the Red Cross unit traveled by armored train on the Chinese Eastern Railroad to a Red Cross hospital in Buchedu, Manchuria.
