Armstrong, Karan (1941– )

US soprano. She sang in the USA from 1969 before her European debut in Strasbourg, in 1976, as Salome. She appeared at Bayreuth in 1979, as Elsa. In 1981 she sang Lulu at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in the first British performance of the three-act version of Berg's opera; in the same year she created the title role in Giuseppe Sinopoli's opera Lou Salomé, at Munich. She appeared at Los Angeles 1990–92, as Alice Ford, Fidelio, and Emilia Marty. She often appears in the productions of her husband, Götz Friedrich.
