Armstrong, Richard (1943- )

English conductor. He studied at Cambridge, was on the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, staff 1966-68, assistant conductor of the Welsh National Opera 1968-73, and musical director there 1973-86. He conducted several Janáček productions. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1982, with Billy Budd; in 1986 he led the Welsh National Opera in The Ring at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He was appointed musical director of the Scottish Opera from 1993, and awarded a CBE in 1992.
