Armstrong, Samuel Chapman

Armstrong, Samuel Chapman (1839-1893)

US soldier and philanthropist. He was born in the Hawaiian Islands, the son of missionaries, and served on the Union side in the Civil War. He acquired distinction as a commander of black troops, and founded the Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute, a vocational school for blacks, 1868.
