Arnell, Richard (Anthony Sayer) (1917– )

English composer. He studied with John Ireland at the Royal College of Music in London and took the Farra Prize in 1938. From 1939 to 1947 he lived in New York, where he was consultant to the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) US service.

Love in Transit (1958), The Petrified Princess (1959).

Ballet

Punch and the Child (1947), Harlequin in April (1951), The Great Detective (after Conan Doyle; 1953).

Orchestral

seven symphonies; symphonic poem Lord Byron (1952) and other orchestral music; violin concerto.

Chamber

five string quartets.

piano and organ music; film music.
