Arnhem

Capital of Gelderland province, Netherlands, situated on the Rhine near where it joins the IJssel, 56 km/35 mi southeast of Utrecht; population (1997) 135,000. It produces salt, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. During World War II, the town was the scene of fierce fighting in 1944 (see Arnhem, Battle of), when much of the old town was destroyed.

The town hall has a museum of antiquities and an open-air museum displaying reconstructed vernacular (domestic) buildings from different regions of the country.

Arnhem was a member of the Hanseatic League, and was conquered at various times by Burgundy, France, and Prussia.
