Arnold, Thomas (1795–1842)English schoolmaster, father of the poet and critic Matthew Arnold. He was headmaster of Rugby School 1828–42. His regime has been graphically described in Thomas Hughes's Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857). He emphasized training of character, and had a profound influence on public school education.
