Toynbee, Arnold (1852–1883)

English economic historian who coined the term ‘industrial revolution’ in his ‘Lectures on the Industrial Revolution’, published in 1884.

Toynbee Hall, an education settlement in the east end of London, was named after him.

There are two ways of viewing the situation on the continent: thinkers like Oswald Spengler believed Europe is on the verge of inevitable collapse; others, like the late Arnold Toynbee, believed that a small group of reformers can reinvigorate the culture.
