Arnould, Sophie (1740-1802)

French operatic soprano. She entered the Paris Opéra in 1757 and was the most prominent singer there till 1778. Among her chief parts were those of Iphigenia in Gluck's Iphigenia in Aulis, Eurydice in his Orpheus and Eurydice, and the principal roles in Jean-Philippe Rameau's works.

She was renowned for her wit and conversational powers, and was the friend of the intellectuals and philosophers d'Alembert, Helvétius, Diderot, and Rousseau.
