arquebus

Portable long-barrelled gun fired either by a matchlock or wheel lock; by the middle of the 15th century the term had come to mean a light firearm for military or sporting use.

In 1630 the Council of War defined an arquebus as a firearm with an overall length of 114 cm/45 in, a barrel length of 76 cm/30 in, and a 43-cm/17-in bore.
