ars nova

Music composed in France and Italy during the 14th century. Originally introduced by Philippe de Vitry, it is distinguished by rhythmic and harmonic variety, and the increased importance of duple time (two beats in a bar) and independent voice parts. Guillaume de Machaut mastered the style in France. In Italy the madrigal grew out of ars nova.
