Blakey, Art(hur) (1919–1990)

US jazz drummer and bandleader. His dynamic, innovative style made him one of the jazz greats. He contributed to the development of bebop in the 1940s and subsequently to hard bop, and formed the Jazz Messengers in the mid-1950s, continuing to lead the band for most of his life and discovering many talented musicians.

As a teen, he soaked up the sounds of American small-group jazz by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers.
Even today, when little Pee Wee Marquette announces, "Welcome to Birdland, Ladies and Gentleman," my mind spirals to New York: twenty-four years to reach my father's brownstone, and then twenty-six more, until it's 1954, nine years to my birth, but I'm in the room--actually in the club, right near the stand--eye level with Art Blakey and Clifford Brown and Lou Donaldson and Curley Russell and Horace Silver, and they're about to change my life forever with "Split Kick" and "Once in a While.
Percussive beats open "The Year of the Drum" at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, celebrating one of the greatest drummers and band-leaders in jazz history, Art Blakey, who performed with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, and others during his multidecade career.
