Tatum, Art(hur) (1910–1956)

US jazz pianist. He is considered among the most technically brilliant of jazz pianists and is highly rated by classical pianists. His technique and chromatic harmonies influenced many musicians, such as Canadian jazz painist Oscar Peterson (1925– ). Self-taught and blind, he worked mainly as a soloist in the 1930s and improvised with the guitarist Tiny Grimes (1917–1989) in a trio from 1943.
