Artaserse

Opera by Girolamo Abos (libretto by Pietro Metastasio), first produced at the Teatro di San Giovanni Grisostomo, Venice, Italy, during Carnival in 1746. The plot describes an attempt by Artabano to poison Artaserse, which is prevented by his own son.

It is also the title of the first opera by Christoph Willibald von Gluck (libretto by Metastasio), first produced at the Teatro Regio Ducal, Milan, Italy, on 26 December 1741. There are other settings by Johann Hasse (Venice, 1730), Karl Graun (Berlin, 1743), and Niccolò Jommelli (Rome, 1749).
