Artaxerxes I

Artaxerxes I (lived 5th century BC)

King of Persia 465–424 BC, son of Xerxes I. During his reign Athens supported an Egyptian revolt 460–454. He sanctioned the Jewish religion in Jerusalem by allowing the the Hebrew scribe Ezra to lead his people from Babylon to Jerusalem 458 BC and by appointing as governor of Judea his cup-bearer Nehemiah 445 BC. He was succeeded in 423 by Darius II, his son.
