Artesia

Town in Los Angeles County, southwest California, USA; population (1990) 15,500. It is situated 26 km/16 mi southeast of Los Angeles. Founded in 1875, it derived its name from the many wells in the area, used to maintain local agriculture. Though now mostly residential, the town also has a variety of light industries.

Artesia

Town in Eddy County, southeast New Mexico, USA; population (2000) 10,700. It is situated 6 km/4 mi west of the Pecos River and 60 km/37 mi south-southeast of Roswell. Named for the artesian wells that irrigate the area's farms and ranches, it is an oil drilling centre and manufactures petroleum products. The town, in an area that also yields potash and natural gas, has light industries and some tourism.
