Artevelde, Jacob van (c. 1295–1345)

Flemish patriot. During the revolt against Count Louis 1337, he led the insurgents. He allied with Edward III of England against the king of France during the Hundred Years' War, and assisted at the siege of Tournai 1340. In the truce that followed, he stipulated the independence of Flanders, and became its governor. Later he offered the crown of Flanders to the Prince of Wales. He was killed at Ghent in a popular rising against his despotic rule.
