Asahan

River of northeast Sumatra, Indonesia; rising in Lake Toba, it flows northeast to the Strait of Malacca. The Asahan has a power potential of one million kilowatts, and in 1975 a scheme was approved to build two hydroelectric plants, an aluminium smelter (using bauxite from Bintan Island), and necessary port facilities at Kuala Tanjung.

Production of aluminium has frequently been halted as the water level of Lake Toba has dropped by 2 m/6 ft, associated with droughts.
