Asahikawa

City in central Hokkaido Island, Japan; 120 km/75 mi northeast of Sapporo; population (2005) 355,000. The city is located in the Kamikawa lowland basin in the upper Ishikari River valley, near Daisetsuzan National Park and Chikabuini, a reservation for the indigenous Ainu people. It lies at the centre of a major rice-growing region of Hokkaido. Asahikawa has been industrialized since 1945, with industries based on lumber, such as paper pulp, matches, and furniture, as well as brewing, textiles, chemicals, ceramics, and sake. It has an airport.

Asahikawa was founded in the Meiji period (1868–1912) as a government-sponsored farmer-militia settlement. It is the birthplace of the celebrated Japanese writer Yashushi Inoue.
