Asansol

Town in West Bengal state, northeast India, situated about 180 km/112 mi northwest of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); population (1991) 763,800. It lies on the Raniganj coalfield and has a growing heavy manufacturing sector producing iron, steel and textiles.
