asbestos

Any of several related minerals of fibrous structure that offer great heat resistance because of their nonflammability and poor conductivity. Commercial asbestos is generally either made from serpentine (‘white’ asbestos) or from sodium iron silicate (‘blue’ asbestos). The fibres are woven together or bound by an inert material. Over time the fibres can work loose and, because they are small enough to float freely in the air or be inhaled, asbestos usage is now strictly controlled; exposure to its dust can cause cancer.

Asbestos has been used for brake linings, suits for fire fighters and astronauts, insulation of electric wires in furnaces, and fireproof materials for the building industry. Exposure to asbestos is a recognized cause of industrial cancer (mesothelioma), especially in the ‘blue’ form (from South Africa), rather than the more common ‘white’. In 2001 there were 30,000 new cases of asbestos-related cancer in industrialized countries. Asbestos dust can also cause asbestosis, a chronic lung inflammation. There are severe restrictions around the world on the production and use of asbestos, and on the methods by which it is removed from existing installations.

Asbestos

Town in Richmond County, south Québec, Canada; population (1991) 6,500. It is situated 42 km/26 mi north of Sherbrooke. Its economy centres around the mining of asbestos; the huge Jeffrey open-pit mine (1905) is located here, and the town was site of a 1949 miners' strike, a significant landmark in Québec labour history. Copper, iron, and slate are also mined in the area. Local products include electrical equipment and wood products.

It is only when asbestos containing materials are disturbed or the materials become damaged in such a manner that fibres are released, that it becomes a hazard.
In addition, if home renovations are planned, surveys of suspect asbestos containing materials and lead based paint should be undertaken by licensed individuals, (New York State Department of Labor certified asbestos inspector, EPA licensed lead inspector, with samples analyzed by a laboratory approved by the New York State Department of Health) with any required remediation/abatement activities performed by licensed asbestos abatement firms
Friable asbestos containing materials is not that harmful because , they do not release dangerous asbetos fiber into the air.
