Aschaffenburg

City in Bavaria, Germany, on the River Main, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Frankfurt am Main; population (1993) 65,200. Aschaffenburg is a river port and holiday resort. Its main industries are metalworking and the manufacture of clothing and paper.

Aschaffenburg stands on the site of a former Roman fortress. The Renaissance castle of Johannisburg was once the residence of the archbishops of Mainz.
