Ashbee, Charles Robert

    0.12 sec.

Ashbee, Charles Robert (1863-1942)

English designer, architect, and writer. He was one of the major figures of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He founded a Guild and School of Handicraft in the East End of London in 1888, but ultimately modified his views, accepting the importance of machinery and design for industry.

He based his ideas on the social function of art from the writings of William Morris and John Ruskin, and aimed to achieve high standards in craftwork and quality of life, which were both threatened by the onset of mass production. The guild and school, which later moved to Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, employed over 100 craftworkers at its peak.

His publications included ‘The Book of Cottages and Little Houses’ (1906).
