Ashbourne

Market town in Derbyshire, England; population (2001) 7,600. It is situated 21 km/13 mi northwest of Derby, on the River Dove, forming the gateway to Dovedale. It is well-known for its mineral water.

Attractions include Tissington Hall and Gardens and the cruciform church, dating from the 13th century, which has a spire over 60 m/197 ft high, is known as the ‘Cathedral of the Peaks’. The grammar school in Ashbourne was founded in 1585. Two engagements took place here during the Civil War.
