Ashburton, Alexander, 1st Baron Ashburton (1774–1848)

English financier and politician. The son of Sir Francis Baring, co-founder of the Baring Brothers merchant bank, he succeeded his father in 1810 as head of the business. As special commissioner to the USA he concluded the Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which settled the frontier between Canada and the USA on the eastern seaboard.
