Ashdod

Deep-water port of Israel, on the Mediterranean 32 km/20 mi south of Tel Aviv; population (1994) 120,100. It is 3 km/1.9 mi from the ancient city of the same name.

The Philistines brought here the ark of the covenant and placed it in the temple of Dagon. Ashdod figures in the New Testament under the name of Azotus. It was captured by the Assyrians in the 8th century, and by the Egyptians in the 7th century BC. After being sacked by the Maccabees it was rebuilt by the Romans.
