Asheboro

Town and administrative headquarters of Randolph County, central North Carolina, USA; population (1990) 16,400. It is located in the Uwharrie Mountains. Local industry is centred on large hosiery and knitwear mills; other manufactures include wood products and upholstery. Founded on the site of a prehistoric Keyauwee settlement in 1779, it developed as a trade centre. In 1889, it was linked to High Point, 32 km/20 mi to the northwest, by railroad. Industrialization followed, beginning with lumber plants.
