Ashfield

Town in Franklin County, west Massachusetts, USA; population (1998 est) 1,700. It is situated 16 km/10 mi west-southwest of Greenfield. The area originally concentrated upon the production of peppermint, then other food products of which the most important was maple syrup. In recent years agriculture has declined, and Ashfield is now a residential area for local towns and cities.

Originally called Hunterstown from 1736, the town became Ashfield when it was incorporated in 1765, named after Lord Thurlow of Ashfield in England.
