Ashingdon, Battle of

Victory on 18 October 1016 of King Canute's Danish army over King Edmund II (‘Ironside’) at the village of Ashingdon, Essex. Following the battle, only Wessex remained in English hands and when Edmund died 30 November, Canute ruled the whole kingdom. See also Danelaw.
