Ashland

Town in Boyd County, northeast Kentucky; population (2000) 22,000. It is situated on the Ohio River, to the east of Louisville, and 19 km/12 mi west-northwest of Huntington, West Virginia, in a region rich in coal, clay, oil, limestone, and natural gas. Iron and steel, firebrick, chemicals, oil products, coke, mining equipment, and leather are manufactured in the town.

Ashland was settled in 1815 and was known as Poage Settlement until 1850; it was incorporated as a city in 1870 and developed as an iron and steel centre. The town is built around Central Park, noted for its American Indian mounds.
