Ashtabula

City and port in Ashtabula County, northeast Ohio, USA; population (2000) 21,000. It is located 89 km/55 mi northeast of Cleveland. The town was founded c. 1801 on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Ashtabula River. It was a vital stop on the Underground Railroad (a network for escaped slaves) in the 1850s. Ashtabula is a trading centre for the Lake Erie resort area, and has long been a major port. Particularly important in the interstate transport of iron and coal, it also handles international shipping. Local manufactures include automobile, truck, and tractor parts, chemicals, farm and garden tools, fibreglass, and reinforced plastics.
