pawpaw

Small tree belonging to the custard-apple family, native to the eastern USA. It produces oblong fruits 13 cm/5 in long with yellowish edible flesh. The name ‘pawpaw’ is also used for the papaya. (Asimina triloba, family Annonaceae.)

McLaughlin's dad gave him some "Indiana bananas" -- the custard-like fruit of Asimina triloba, better known as the pawpaw tree.
Six other shrubby Asimina species grow in Florida, But the common American pawpaw, Asimina triloba, is the only true temperate species, and it ranges from Florida to Texas, north to northern New York and even into southern Ontario, and westward to Michigan, Illinois, southern lowa, and southeast Nebraska.
