Asir

Region and province in southwest Saudi Arabia; area 103,850 sq km/40,086 sq mi. Asir extends from the southern border of Hejaz to the northern border of Yemen, and includes the Asir mountain range (highest peak being Jebel Sawdah, 3,133 m/10,280 ft), which runs parallel to the coast of the Red Sea, and the Farsan Islands. The maritime lowland has many fertile areas which are used for agriculture. The chief towns are Abha and Jizan.

Asir was incorporated into Saudi Arabia under the Treaty of Taif (1934).

This serum sample was collected on November 22, 2000, from a case-patient infected in Asir Province.
Dinner banquet guests included Prince Charles of England, King Simeon II and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria, and Prince Khalid Al-Faisal ibn Abd A1-Aziz, governor of Asir and director general of the King Faisal Foundation.
A united Yemen would be more populous than the Saudi state, perhaps influenced by the radical ideology of the National Front, and possessed of irredentist grievances against the Saudis in the Asir region .
