Aspdin, Joseph

    0.01 sec.

Aspdin, Joseph (1779-1855)

English stonemason and inventor. In 1824 he patented Portland cement, manufactured from clay and limestone, a hydraulic cement that would set hard even under water.

He was one of several people searching for an artificial cement in an effort to reduce the building industry's dependence on increasingly scarce and expensive timber.
