aspect ratio

In computing, the relative horizontal and vertical sizes of images. An image with an aspect ratio of 2:1 means that the width is twice the length of the height. When resizing graphics, maintaining the aspect ratio avoids stretching the picture out of proportion. Graphics software packages will usually incorporate an option to maintain the aspect ratio during image resize operations.

The term is also used to describe the dimensions of a display resolution. For example, a resolution of 800×600 has an aspect ratio of 4:3.
