aspenAny of several species of poplar tree. The European quaking aspen (Populus tremula) has flattened leafstalks that cause the leaves to flutter in the slightest breeze. The soft, light-coloured wood is used for matches and paper pulp. (Genus Populus.) AspenResort town in central Colorado, on the Roaring Fork River, lying at an altitude of 2,417 m/7,930 ft; seat of Pitkin County; population (2000 est) 5,900. Aspen offers winter skiing and summer river rafting, and is a cultural centre with an annual music festival. HistoryEstablished as a silver-mining town in the 1880s (and named after trees in the area), Aspen was incorporated as a city in 1881. It was a booming silver-mining centre until the early 1890s, when the collapse of silver prices threatened its existence; the current resort city was developed after World War II by Walter P Paepcke, a Chicago industrialist.FeaturesAspen has 29 entries on the National Register of Historic Places, including a cemetery, church, and houses.How to thank TFD for its existence?
