euthanasiaIn medicine, ‘mercy killing’ of someone with a severe and incurable condition or illness. Euthanasia is a highly controversial issue on medical and ethical grounds. A patient's right to refuse life-prolonging treatment is recognized in several countries. In November 2000, the Netherlands became the first country to legalize euthanasia. In the UK, despite a number of test cases in 2003, all forms of euthanasia are illegal and considered as criminal acts.

I'm writing with objections to your Culture War column by Faye Girsh, "Ashcroft, Eastwood, and Assisted Dying," in the May/June 2005 Humanist. As statutes stand today in Oregon, the only state in the union where assisted dying is legal (though it is known to be practiced in other states), neither the Hillary Swank character or Ramon Sampedro would be allowed to have legal help to end their lives, since neither was terminally ill. California voters narrowly defeated a ballot measure in 1992 that sought to legalize assisted dying, but political and social climates have changed since then, said Assemblywoman Carole Migden, D-San Francisco. |
