Nicomedia

Ancient city in Bithynia, in Asia Minor (now northern Turkey). Founded by King Nicomedes I 264 BC, it was well situated at the meeting poing of several trade routes from Asia, and the emperor Diocletian made it capital of the eastern Roman Empire.

The Carthaginian general Hannibal died at Nicomedia.
